GIST Seventh in the QS World University Rankings 2012
GIST:
- ranks No.1 in Asia and No. 1 in Korea for five consecutive years
- is recognized for its world-class research capability and achievements
□ In the World University Rankings 2012 announced on September 10th by QS, Britain’s global university appraisal institute, the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology, or GIST (President: Young Joon Kim) earned a ranking of seventh in the world for its placing in the category of ‘Citations per Faculty’, which is its highest record so far.
- Through its achievement of placing seventh, GIST is the only university from Asia that appears in the Top 10, achieving the best record for a Korean university in any single evaluation criterion.
- American universities tend to dominate the top ten spots of the category of ‘Citations per Faculty’, which marks the frequency of research citations earned by each university’s publications. This year was no exception, with the Rockefeller University of the U.S. ranking No. 1, Caltech (the California Institute of Technology, U.S.A.) placing No. 2, Stanford University (U.S.) earning 3rd, University of California San Francisco (U.S.) making 4th, and Harvard University sitting at 5th. GIST now places amidst these top class universities, demonstrating that it provides world-class research.
□ ‘Citations per Faculty’ is a category that ranks research achievements, the quality of theses, and averages the research capacity of the university. The number of citations by experts in the same field of study shows that the research is meaningful and outstanding, and as such, this is recognized as the most objective criterion for assessing the quality of research.
□ With this year’s QS announcement, GIST is the top ranked university in Asia for the fifth consecutive year in this category. POSTECH achieved a ranking of 77th, down from 69th last year, making it the only other Korean university to be listed in the Top 100. Following from this KAIST ranked 197th and Seoul National University ranked 222nd.
- Most universities ranking in the Top 100 are from the U.S. or Europe, and particularly the U.K, Sweden, the Netherlands, and Switzerland. Apart from two universities from Israel, as in previous years only three universities from Asia were included in the Top 100, including POSTECH, and Tokyo University which ranks 99th.
