The highest competition rate in history

The Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST, President Kim Young Joon) received applications for the 2013 GIST rolling admission (undergraduate course) from 23rd o 31st of this month. The competition rate was 10.86:1, the highest in history. The number of high schools that apply for the GIST also increased about 80% year-on-year.

According to the GIST, a total of 977 applied for the 2013 GIST rolling admission with the capacity of 90, and the final competition rate was 10.86:1, the highest competition rate ever since the GIST College selected the first freshmen in 2010 rolling admission.

Last year when the capacity was only 80, the competition rate was 7.59:1. During the 2011 rolling admission, the competition rate set a record with 8.14:1.

As for the number of applicants (977), students from science high schools and general high schools have increased by 61% from 607 of last year. There were 522 science highschool students and 455 general high school students. The number of high schools that applied for the GIST has soared by 79.6% from 186 of last year to 334.

Established in 1993, the GIST had graduate courses until 2009, and in 2010 it started to select undergraduate students. In 2014, undergraduate students will graduate for the first time.

Applicants who pass the first stage will be announced on October 2nd, and the GIST plans to have in-depth interview with them on October 10th~12th, and announce the list of applicants who pass the interview on the 26th of the same month.
