GIST helds international symposium, inviting environment experts

 


- The symposium will be held for four days from the 10th, attended by 100 eminent scholars from 20 countries.

- Arsenic contamination, an important issue for Southeast Asia, will be discussed.

 

Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology(GIST, President Sonu Jung-Ho) announced that Department of Environmental Science and Engineering(Professor Kim Kyoung-Woong) will hold Joint International Symposium for two internationally renowned academic conferences including PBC (Pacific Basin Consortium for Environment and Health) and SEGH (Society for Environmental Geochemistry and Health) from April 10th to 13th.

 

This academic conferences will be attended by relevant experts in environmental health and medicine and environmental geochemistry from more than 20 countries around the world. For 4 days, there will be 100 presentations and special workshops including special session on arsenic contamination which has emerged as a serious problem in Southeast Asia.

 

In particular, the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences under the National Institutes of Health, and East-West Center located in Hawaii provide 60,000 dollars for the conferences, allowing the invitation of renowned scholars and support for scientists from developing countries, young scientists and graduate students to participate in the conferences.

 

Professor Kim who hosts the conferences said: "I believe it is meaningful that the Joint International Symposium will be attended by both environmental geochemists who conduct research on environmental pollution and restore the environment and experts in environmental medicine who study and prevent the impact of such pollution on human beings at a time when conversion is a major topic in science field." <Section of International and Public Affairs>
