Which university has the highest rate of return on research expenses by linking research outcomes to technology transfer in proportion with invested research expenses? According to "2010 White Paper on University"s Industry-Academy Cooperation which the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology compiled the status of industry-academia cooperation among 153 nation-wide universities, Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) has the highest rate on return rate of research expenses.

The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and National Research Foundation of Korea published the Industry-Academy Cooperation White Paper on the 6th. The White Paper compiles the current status of industry-academia cooperation institutes, patent·technology transfer·commercialization, and development of human resources in the industrial complexes from 153 universities that have relatively active industry-academia cooperation.

In particular, as in the past individual performances of industry-academia cooperation was announced separately, achievements of each cooperation project compared to invested research expenses have not been clear. However, the White Paper made possible the comparison among those achievements

"The rate of return on research expenses" is an index that shows the "output out of input" of research expenses because it explains how successful the research is in terms of technology transfer and commercialization, and what the return rate of research expenses is.

Among 153 universities in Korea, GIST ranks first with 3.704% of return rate as of 2010, followed by Hoseo University(3.663%), Dongguk University (2.358%), Inha University (1.895%), Gyeongsang National University (1.791%).
