Upon the launch of the National Science and Technology Commission (NSTC), Mr. Kim Do-yeon, NSTC Commissioner, visited the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) and GIST President Jung-Ho Sonu on the afternoon of May 13th.  Mr. Kim also held a meeting with young GIST researchers to gather opinions from their respective fields, as well as to inform them of policy making processes with regards to the NSTC.

Commissioner Kim said, "We need to ‘open up and cooperate’ in order to strengthen the effectiveness and efficiency of national R&D projects." He also added, "the National Science and Technology Commission will try its best to facilitate researchers who wish ‘to open up and cooperate’ with each other in planning scientific and technological R&D projects–both to cope with the future and advance the national agenda." Mr. Kim also encouraged field researchers, saying that the launch of the Commission would help Korean scientists, especially researchers, feel more proud of their accomplishments and contributions. Moreover, the Commission will work harder to help researchers focus on research.

Since March 31st, the Commissioner has been visiting multiple institutes starting with the Korea Institute of Material Science (KIMS), the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology (KITECH), the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) and the Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials (KIMM). He is additionally planning to visit governmentally funded research institutes–including GIST–to gather opinions from various fields during the month of May.
