Technical support to create “Two-way Trackless Trolley”

The tourist trolley created by Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) (President Jung-Ho Sonu) technology is performing with excellence at a world yacht race.



 



Korea International Boat Show 2010 and Korea Match Cup 2010 are being held at Tando Harbor of Ansan City, a place gaining a reputation as the advanced base for the maritime industry of the 21st century.



 



A unique tourist trolley operated for the convenience of visitors is the center of attention. The Two-way Boat-type Trackless Trolley is becoming another excitement at the events held at Tando Harbor of Ansan City.



 



The auxiliary hydraulic power steering system was developed to remodel a farming tractor into a boat. Two tow trucks and two small buses were transformed as passenger coaches. The trackless trolley can be driven both ways so that it does not need a large space to turn the trolley around.



 



Although the tourist trolley simply looks like a few boats connected together, it is in fact a combination of various technologies owned by GIST. The Gwangju-Jeonllanam Province Industrial Technology Support Institute under the GIST Technology Institute, established in 2005, received a request in April to provide technical assistance in designing a trolley by Daebong Industries, a business operating in Ansan City and Gwangju. Accordingly, the Industrial Technology Support Institute began to provide technical assistance from May.



 



First, the auxiliary caster steering device and suspension technology were used. This would act as a buffer for shocks. The trolley is designed and created to minimize interference or swerving off the road when driving along curves and embankments that have little space for turning the vehicle around. Furthermore, the fuel injection system technology was used to enable the trolley to operate at maximum torque when turning the engine while operating at low speed, and composite technologies were used, such as hydraulic motor and cylinder, to control all parts of the passenger coaches through a safe, centralized system.



 



The Industrial Technology Support Institute will closely observe the operation of the trackless trolley until July for any possible technical defects and it will continue to provide technical support in case any such defects appear in the future.



 



The Industrial Technology Support Institute is operated to provide active technical assistance to local industries. There is a staff in charge of each business. So far, there were 90 cases of technical instruction and 50 cases of continuous technical instruction and education. They are significantly contributing to the development of local industries that lead to cost reduction, improved productivity and quality enhancement, and the building of the network between the industry, academia and research.
