Advanced Photonics Research Institute (APRI) of Gwangju Institute of Science & Technology (GIST), spurs the international photonics cooperation with Europe

Enters into exchange & cooperation agreements with renowned research institutes in England and Switzerland

Advanced Photonics Research Institute (APRI) of Gwangju Institute of Science & Technology (GIST-President: Jung Ho SONU) is drawing much attention by spurring international cooperation with Europe as it signs a series of agreements with research institutes in England and Switzerland specializing in photonics. GIST recently announced that it signed MOUs with Institute of Applied Physics(IAP) of University of Bern, Switzerland, which has worldclass source technologies in the photonics fiber laser field, and with Optoelectronics Research Centre(ORC) of Southhampton University, England.

GIST and the two institutes agreed to closely coordinate with each other in the photonics fiber laser development field. To this end, the institutes are planning to conduct cooperative activities with each other centering around their photonics information communication research labs.

The photoelectron research center of Southampton University was established in 1989 and contributed to the development of photonics industries including photonics telecommunication technology for the past 40 years, and the Institute of Applied Physics(IAP) of University of Bern, which was established in 1961, has been conducting various researches including medical science using laser photonics and development of applied technologies in the information technology field.

Dr. Noh Young Chul, head of the photonics information telecommunication research center of APRI, said “we are planning to play a catalytic role in obtaining world-class research capacities by conducting various cooperative activities with renowned overseas research institutes so as to create mutual synergy effect”.

Meanwhile, since 2001 until now, the APRI has established cooperative relationships with 20 institutes from 11 countries including U.S., Japan, France, and England, and continues to actively proceed with international cooperative activities in the photonics technology field such as spearheading the reinforcing of laser research capacities through cooperation with Asian countries, by conducting “Asian Laser Center Project” since 2008.
