GIST’s first undergraduate entrance ceremony with Masters and PhD course

GIST (Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology, President Jung-Ho SUNO) held 2010 entrance ceremony for undergraduate and graduate students with 400 distinguished guests at its auditorium at 11:00 a.m. on March 2.

The entrance ceremony marks a fresh start for GIST as one of the best universities as it first enrolls its undergraduate students that GIST has longed for in order to produce high talents in science and technology. Jung Hyun Kim, a vice minister of ministry of education science and technology, Kwangtae Park, mayor of Gwangju, Youngjin Kim lawmaker and Woontae Kang lawmaker attended the ceremony.
GIST had all 345 new students comprised of 100 undergraduates, 167 in Master, 71 in PhD and 7 in Master and PhD course among whom there are 21 foreign students from nine countries.
Out of 100 undergraduate students, 60 % of them graduated from science high school, 40% from general high school. In terms of regions, the metropolitan area accounted for 44% and Honam area for 25%, Chungcheong for 12%, Youngman for 10%, Gangwon for 6% and the rest 3%, showing equal distribution.
A building for undergraduates with a size of 10,891 Pyong is composed of dormitories, power plants, student hall, research hall, and Labs. GIST establishes best-class eco-friendly green campus for the first time as a university with highly fuel-efficient low-carbon buildings and classrooms for debate, providing sophisticated educational environment for undergraduates.
Furthermore, a new research center for renewable energy is poised to focus on green energy business with solar energy study using organic photovoltaic cells. GIST plans to develop the center as the world-class research institute with its full capacity so that GIST takes the lead in low-carbon green growth.
With a new undergraduate course, as of February 26, the title of the head of GIST changes from the director to the president as the Act on GIST was revised on January 25. As a result, GIST advances into a university.
GIST undergraduate course is sure to generate top human resources in science based on its innovative educational course, great faculty members and research capacity accumulated from graduate course and world-class academic level. The undergraduate course will provide small group class, class focused on experiment, face to face mentor between professors and students, intensive investment on basic science and mathematics and education on humanities, art and social science.
Jung Hyun Kim, vice minister of the ministry of education science and technology said he expects GIST to nurture best talents in science with balanced knowledge based on its creative educational background and hopes all the students of GIST will grow as world’s best talents.
The president mentioned at the ceremony that GIST will advance into a global university in education area commensurate with its top-quality research ability and that GIST will become vital not only in Gwangju but also nationwide as it is at the forefront of high tech and plays a bigger role in the development of science technology with a start of research on renewable energy.
