Ms, Eun who is studying 3D TV said, “I only had 2 hours sleep last night preparing for a project presentation.”

She usually arrives at the lab 9 am in the morning and studies until 10 pm. When a class presentation is scheduled, she stays up all night to study and goes to the dorm the next morning. There she gets a little sleep and returns to the lab.<o:p></o:p>

Ms. Eun said, “Since 3D television is attracting global attention, there are many papers dealing with it, and the review schedule changes often. Also, given that quality is more important than quantity, I have to keep up with the latest research findings to write a decent paper.”

They emphasized, saying “Strict evaluation criteria is the best secret to producing high-quality research.”<o:p></o:p>

The university retains top spot in Korea for 12th consecutive year in number of thesis published in journals listed in the SCI. Such remarkable performance – better than such rivals as Seoul National University and KAIST - is attributable to the ‘Competition and Evaluation’ system launched earlier. <o:p></o:p>

Such strict criteria also apply to prospective tenure candidates. The process is well-known for being harsh: Only 50 – 70% of applicants pass the test. In GIST, the latest trend gaining steam among Korean universities– growing difficulties to obtain tenure – has been prevalent at GIST over the past 10 years.   When it comes to research, quality matters as much as quantity. If a professor applied for promotion, he, or she has to go through a process called ‘Peer Review’ in which the university seeks opinions of prestigious foreign professors in the same field to reflect them in the promotion screening process. “We believe that in almost all cases, a person’s level of academic skills and sophistication can be best gauged by asking opinions of foreign experts of the same major because it’s hard to get recognized in one’s own field of study unless you produced lots of excellent papers,” said Hee-chul Choi, Director of International Relations (Dept. of Environmental Science & Engineering).<o:p></o:p>

The papers published in the journals with greater impact factor receive added points. That suggests the university seeks to put quality before quantity. <o:p></o:p>

GIST helps professors to concentrate on their research works by allowing them to teach only one course per semester. Add to that, all students live in dormitory, which helps them focus on studying without wasting their time commuting to and from school.<o:p></o:p>
