Opening presentation session for online public MOOC lectures

□ The Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST, President Seung Hyeon Moon), which boasts world-class achievements in the area of citations per faculty, is actively promoting educational innovation by producing online public MOOC * lectures and offering them to students and to the general public who are interested in science and technology.

* MOOC, which refers to online public lessons for large-scale users, has spread to the UK, France, Germany, and China since its launch in the US in 2012 and offers the goal of unlimited participation and accessibility to students through the web. Since 2015, K-MOOC has been operating a platform called 'K-MOOC', and 600 courses are currently open to the public.

□ GIST held online open MOOC lecture on February 5, 2018, which was attended by faculty members, students, and producers in the conference room on the 2nd floor of the administrative building.

∘ From the beginning of July, 2017, GIST started production in earnest. "Climate Change and Future Technology" (Professor Joon Ha Kim of the School of Earth Sciences and Environmental Engineering), "Energy and Future Society" (Professor Chum Taek Rim of the Institute of Integrated Technology), and "Character Design, Animation, Rendering" (Professor Bochang Moon of the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science) are the first MOOC lectures produced by GIST.

∘ GIST plans to offer the MOOC contents produced by the GIST through the GIST e-Learning System (GEL), which is an internal learning management system (LMS). The courses will also be open to the public.

□ In June 2016, the Presidential Council for Science and Technology Institutes (GIST, KAIST, DGIST, UNIST, and POSTECH) agreed on a joint cooperation program, including the joint development and utilization of MOOC contents. These five universities will form a working group and continuously coordinate with each other to maximize the strengths and synergy of each university.

∘ Unlike existing online learning videos, which can only be heard in one direction from the viewpoint of learners, MOOC contents will allow student to communicate with faculty members or other students bi-directionally. The MOOC contents produced by GIST are expected to be differentiated in terms of educational quality because they are produced by a special science and technology university.

□ President Seung Hyeon Moon said, " MOOC is not intended to be 'convenient' to education, but it can be said to be a new 'civilization' in a way that matches all social changes based on the platform and new industry trends. Because GIST has always pursued the goal of 'globalization,' I am more interested in MOOC as a form of education that can be accessed from all over the world."
