GIST hosts graduation ceremony for the second semester of 2017

□ On August 18, 2017, four hundred people, including family, friends, and students, gathered at the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST, President Seung Hyeon Moon) to attend a graduation ceremony for the second semester of 2017. 

∘ A total of 147 students, including 44 Ph.Ds, 88 master's degrees, and 15 bachelor's degrees were conferred. An honorary degree was also conferred to Jae-cheol Kim, a former GIST President and Dongwon Group Chairman.
□ GIST awarded an honorary doctorate degree to Jae-cheol Kim, a former GIST President and Dongwon Group Chairman, who has made significant contributions to the development of GIST, as well as a spirit of entrepreneurship that he showed in establishing the Dongwon Group.

∘ Jae-cheol Kim was born in 1935 and is based in Gangjin-gun, Jeollanam-do. He has been serving as the chairman of the Dongwon Group since 1989. He has won the Golden Tower Order of Merit, the National Merit Award, and the Mugunghwa Peony Plant Award from the government.

□ The average number of papers published by the GIST's graduates in SCI journals during their doctoral studies was 7.09 per person.

∘ 44 Ph.D. graduates in the second semester in 2017 published an average of 2.57 papers as first-authors and 4.52 paper as co-authors during their doctoral course for a total average of 7.09 published papers per papers in an SCI-listed journal.

□ Dr. Eun-tae Yang (School of Earth Sciences and Environmental Engineering under Professor In S. Kim), published the most papers among the Ph.D. graduates with 18 papers, including 8 as first author and 10 as co-author.

∘ In particular, Dr. Yang wrote a paper on using graphene oxide material as a desalination membranes for seawater that will improve the forward osmosis process. The paper entitled "Enhanced desalination performance of forward osmosis membranes based on reduced graphene oxide laminates coated with hydrophilic polydopamine" was recognized for its outstanding research results.

□ GIST has been ranked globally in the top three for "citations per faculty," which highlights its academic power and research capability, being recognized in the world for its excellent research results. 100% of the graduate students in the master's and doctoral programs participate in research, and major courses have been taught in English since its inception.

∘ This allows graduate students to publish their articles in international journals and to present their research projects and achievements at various international conferences.

□ GIST President Seung Hyeon Moon said, "GIST students are able to devote themselves to study and research with a lot of support from the public, so I hope they will become warm-hearted scientist who, along with their research, will not forget the responsibility of service and contributing to society in the future."
