GIST hosts opening ceremony for 14th session of Learning Zone

□ The student volunteer program at the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST • President Seung Hyeon Moon) known as Learning Zone started its 14th session with an opening ceremony on April 27, 2017, at Oryong Hall with about 100 GIST students participants.

∘ The Learning Zone is sponsored by the Gwangju Metropolitan City government to support regional children's centers.

∘ The number of student volunteers increased to 95 from 63 in the previous session, and the number of supported children's centers in increased from 16 to 19. The number of student volunteers assigned to a children's center will also increase from four to five.

□ The Learning Zone is one of GIST's most popular social service programs. GIST students are assigned as volunteers to local children's center around the Gwangju area and visit once or twice a week to teach English, mathematics, and science to low-income children. The GIST students also provide mentorship and career counseling.

It is an educational donation activity that helps the children of the caregiver (low-income class) learn the subject and carries out career counseling.

□ GIST Vice President of Public Affairs Pilwan Park explained that the Learning Zone is representative of GIST's efforts to be socially responsible by providing numerous community outreach activities that help and support the local community.  The Learning Zone provides socially conscious students with an opportunity to contribute to the local community while helping to educate the younger generation to be successful in their futures.
