APRI hosted a science fair for local elementary school students
□ The Advanced Photonics Research Institute (APRI • Director Byeong Ha Lee) at the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST • President Seung Hyeon Moon) hosted a world science day fair for local elementary school students from Cheomdan on April 18,2017.
□ This event has been held every year since 2007 during Science Month to encourage elementary school students to become more curious about science and technology by giving them a hands-on opportunity to learn more about lasers and light. 48 students and four science teachers from three local Cheomdan elementary schools participated in the science fair.
□ Students participated in several exploratory session under the guidance of APRI researchers who demonstrated the miraculous nature of light, painting with lasers, blowing a box-shaped balloon, making a laser-generated Christmas tree, and making a laser alarm.
□ APRI Director Byeong Ha Lee said, "APRI has developed the world's first 4.2-petawatt ultra-high power laser and has produced outstanding achievements in basic science and industrial applications, such as manufacturing the most powerful fiber laser for the defense industry. I hope that the unique experiences we offer through this science fair will be a chance to instill elementary school students with dreams of becoming future scientists."
