GIST's International Environmental Research Center held the first kick-off meeting for the Climate Change Response Technology Development Project

GIST's International Environmental Research Center (Director Joon Ha Kim) held the first kick-off meeting for the Climate Change Response Technology Development Project on March 14, 2017, at Oryong Hall. Approximately 60 participants, including researchers, attended this initial meeting where GIST's vision and goals regarding climate change were announced, including future research plans and initiatives.

Director Joon Ha Kim opened the meeting with a presentation entitled "An Introduction to Climate Technology and a Vision for the Future." Participants of this initial meeting will promote responses to climate change, such as developing new technologies to reduce or reuse carbon dioxide. By introducing new initiatives and setting new research goals, the Climate Change Response Technology Development Project hopes to respond effectively to climate change by establishing a low-carbon society.

The Climate Change Response Technology Development Project is based on the roadmap set by the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning and includes such goals as developing technologies for an energy-neutral social infrastructure for carbon reduction, developing technologies to covert carbon into high-value added materials, developing artificial intelligence to process environmental information using smart sensors to cope with climate change, developing a 3D monitoring system for atmospheric carbon, and developing technologies to convert carbon dioxide into carbon monoxide. GIST professors, including Kyoung-Woong Kim, Young Mo Kim, Joon Ha Kim, Youngjune Park, and Sukwon Hong, participated in the meeting.

Professor Kyoung-Woong Kim of the School of Earth Sciences and Environmental Engineering said, "The development of technologies responding to climate change cannot be undertaken by one country alone but requires participation from every country in the world to be successful."

In addition, many of the researchers are expected to contribute to the commercialization of climate technology through early implementation of successful prototypes and core technologies.

Director Joon Ha Kim said, "With the advent of the 4th Industrial Revolution, future predictions became more important than ever, and this has increased the need for technological strategies to find solutions to those pending problems. We expect to find preemptive solutions to these problems through the GIST's Climate Change Response Technology Development Project."
