Dasan Distinguished Professor Byoung Seung Ham of GIST School of Information and Communications has been appointed to the editorial advisory board of Optics Communications, an international academic journal listed on the Science Citation Index. As a member of the editorial advisory board, Professor Ham will be performing duties such as classifying submitted papers and assigning judges for three years starting in August 2014.

A leading scientist in the field of quantum memories, Professor Ham joined GIST in March 2013 as a Dasan Distinguished Professor. After receiving his Ph.D. degree from Wayne State University in the United States, Professor Ham experimentally demonstrated electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in solids for the first time in the world and published the results in Physical Review Letters in 1997. Professor Ham also developed a novel quantum memory with a storage time of up to 10 hours for the first time in the world and published the results in Nature Photonics in 2009.

In addition to such outstanding research achievements, Professor Ham has made active contributions to building international networks of researchers. Since 2000, he has helped organize quantum optics workshops. This year, he is serving on the organizational committees for the quantum optics session of PIERS 2014 to be held in Guangzhou, China in August and for the quantum nonlinear optics session of SPIE Photonics Asia to be held in Beijing, China in October.
