Professor Kyoung-Woong Kim receives the 18th 'Kim Ok-Jun Award'
□ Professor Kyoung-Woong Kim of the School of Earth Sciences and Environmental Engineering at the Gwangju Institute if Science and Technology (GIST, President Seung Hyeon Moon) has received the 'Kim Ok-joon Award', which is recognized as one of the highest in the field, in recognition of his outstanding achievements.
∘ This year, the 18th 'Kim Ok-Jun Award' awards ceremony will be held at the 50th annual meeting of the Korean Society of Engineering Geology in Busan on April 18, 2018.
□ The Korean Society of Engineering Geology has been awarding the 'Kim Ok-Jun Award' since 1997 at their annual meetings to a member who has accomplished outstanding academic achievement or developed creative and efficient technology.
∘ Professor Kim Ok-Jun was a great geologist who was widely respected by many people at home and abroad in the field of earth science. He went to the US as a government-sponsored international student in 1949. In 1954, he was the first Korean to receive a doctorate in geology from the University of Colorado. Since 1946, he has been working at Seoul National University and Yonsei University. In 1955, he established the National Geological Survey and served as the first director, contributing greatly to the development of earth science in Korea.
□ Professor Kyoung-Woong Kim received the Excellent Researcher Award from the Korea Institute of Mineral Resources and Science and the Prime Minister's Commendation on Science Day. 36 master's students and 23 doctoral students have graduated from his lab, and he has published over 200 papers in international journals with more than 6700 citations.
□ Professor Kyoung-Woong Kim graduated from Seoul National University, Department of Resource Engineering, in 1987 and completed his master's degree in the same university. In 1993, he obtained his Ph.D. from Imperial College, England. In 1997, he served as the editor of the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Environmental Geology and has been an editor of various international SCI journals.
