GIST students received the silver and bronze medals

at the 23rd Human Tech Paper Award

Graduate students at the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST) were awarded the silver and bronze medals at the '23rd Human Tech Paper Award,' which was sponsored by Samsung Electronics, Jong Ang Ilbo, and the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning.

A research team from the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science won a silver medal. The team members consisted of Young-joon Cho, Su-A Kim, Jae-han Park, Hyo-jong Kim, Young-woong Seok, and Gyu Wang Lee. They were advised by Professor Kuk-Jin Yoon, and their research was about using massive camera networks for object recognition. The students received high praise from the judges for their originality and practicality.

Young-woong Seo from the Department of Chemistry won a silver medal by developing a paper-based diagnostic process that can perform multiple DNA amplification reactions with one base sample. He was advised by Professor Min-Gon Kim, and his research received high praise for expanding the application of medical diagnostic papers from simple tests, such as pregnancy test kits, to DNA-based genetic screening.

Hyoung-jong Kim from the School of Mechanical Engineering won a bronze medal for presenting a simplified model of the 3D focal point restoration technology using artificial neural network. He was advised by Professor Tae Sun Choi, and his research was praised by the judges for improving the accuracy of 3D shape restoration while at the same time reducing computational complexity and the time required.

During the '23rd Human Tech Paper Award', 1830 papers were received from 118 high schools and universities from across Korea, and 116 papers received awards. Silver medal winners were awarded 7 million won, and bronze medal winners were awarded 5 million won.
