  • Chemistry, physics, and life sciences meet in Gwangju, the ‘City of Light’… GIST and IBS Optical Science Research Cluster hold first joint symposium The Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST; President Kichul Lim) announced that three research centers affiliated with the ‘IBS Photon Science Research Cluster’ (Director: Yousoo Kim), located at GIST, held their first joint symposium, ‘Photon Science 2026,’ from September 2 (Wed) to September 3 (Thu) at GIST and in Damyang, Jeollanam-do. The IBS Photon Science Research Cluster consists of the ‘Center for Quantum Conversion Research’ (Director Yousoo Kim) in chemistry, the ‘Center for Relativistic Laser Science’ (Director Kyung Taec Kim) in physics, and the ‘Center for Microbiome-Body-Brain Physiology’ (Director Seong-Bae Suh) in life sciences. The Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST; President Kichul Lim) announced that it hosted the ‘2026 GIST Korea-Switzerland Quantum Photonics Forum’ at the GIST Advanced Photonics Research Institute (APRI) from September 1 (Tue) to 3 (Thu). The event brought together experts in quantum photonics from Korea and Switzerland to share the latest research achievements and discuss strategies for international joint research collaboration. Hosted and organized by GIST APRI, the forum was attended by approximately 70 researchers and officials from both countries. Organized as the third invitational exhibition at Oryong Art Hall for 2026, this exhibition showcases paintings that express the "gap between the visible and the invisible"—a theme the artist has consistently explored—through imagery such as forests, fog, and animals.   • GIST launches consultative body to accelerate commercialization of perovskite solar cells On Monday, August 31, the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST; President Kichul Lim) held a kickoff meeting for the "Consortium for Accelerating the Commercialization of Perovskite Solar Cells" at the Research Institute for Solar and Sustainable Energies Building, announcing the official launch of a cooperative framework aimed at the early commercialization of perovskite solar cells. This consortium operates under the leadership of the "World’s First Perovskite Solar Cell Commercialization Strategic Research Project Group" (hereinafter referred to as the Strategic Research Project Group), which is managed by GIST as part of a strategic research initiative funded by the Ministry of Science and ICT.
