GIST hosts the first self-assessment of the Fisheries-IoT Fusion Project

□ The Korea-Russia MT-IT Convergence Technology Research Center (Director Kiseon Kim) at the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST, President Seung Hyeon Moon) hosted a self-assessment meeting on May 25, 2018, regarding the status of the "Fisheries-IoT Fusion Project," which was promoted by the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries and the Korea Maritime Science and Technology Promotion Agency.

∘ This self-evaluation meeting focused on ▲ current state of basic design for integrated environment ▲ MAC protocol for marine IoT ▲ development of a module using NB-IoT and LoRa ▲ demonstration of a virtual integrated control system.

□ This project is to prevent environmental devastation of the sea caused by loss or abandonment of fisheries (about 10% of annual catches, estimated at 378.7 billion won according to the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries on Dec. 12, 2016) and abandoned fishing gear (about 93% of all marine accidents). Over the next four years, development of marine IoT technology and underwater acoustics technology will be put into practical use through verification and demonstration of actual maritime use for two years.

□ The project is to develop and demonstrate technologies in four major areas (development of marine IoT wireless communication base word identification system, development of a new fishing system, development of phraseology control system, and verification of fish tag identification and control system) as well as policies for each target fishery to increase the utilization of new technologies.

∘ To this end, a total of 19 domestic and overseas universities, companies, and institutions are participating in the GIST-led research and development consortium. In particular, for the systematic promotion and efficient application of this project, there are participating companies such as Jeollanamdo, KT, ETRI, Mokpo Suhyo, Mokpo Kokunseong Kangwang Association, Mokpo Kangwon Network, Gwangju Fishing Network Co.

□ Director Kiseon Kim said, "By applying 5G technologies and future mobile telecommunication technologies such as LTE NB-IoT to word management, this project is going to apply South Korea's IoT information and telecommunication convergence technologies that will result in a global competitive edge to maritime and fisheries industries."

□ On the other hand, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries is focusing on 'future industrialization of the fisheries industry' as one of the 24 core reform projects of the government by developing practical fishing technologies to secure core technologies in the fishery industry.

The Korea-Russia MT-IT Convergence Technology Research Center was selected in 2017, and it will utilize a total of 17.5 billion won in project expenses, including 15 billion won in national expenses for a total of 6 years until 2022. The results of the technology development related to the electronic tag management technology will be demonstrated on the coast of Jeollanamdo.
