"GIST Knowledge Sharing Volunteer Activity Expands Throughout Gwangju" GIST Learning Zone commences its 15th session with an opening ceremony

□ The GIST Learning Zone, a knowledge sharing volunteer program for students, at the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST, President Seung Hyeon Moon) has begun another year of activities after holding its 15th opening ceremony.

∘ On March 30, about 130 people including GIST students and staff members of local children's centers participated in the opening ceremony.

∘ In particular, the GIST Learning Zone is expanding projects with Gwangju City Hall with applications from 77 children's centers. A total of 35 sites will be supported starting from April.

∘ Currently, local children's centers are operating as an elementary student-oriented program, but they are planning to institute a rotational schedule every year to also support middle and high school students.

□ GIST Vice President of Public Relations Pil-hwan Park said, "The GIST Learning Zone is representative of the social contribution activities undertaken by GIST. In particular, we established the GIST Social Development Team last year to contribute more to the region through greater interaction and support. This is how we are realizing the educational goals of GIST to cultivate a caring students who can think creatively and share their knowledge to benefit others."
□ The GIST Learning Zone started on March 1, 2010, and is now in its eighth year. In this volunteer program, GIST students visit local children's centers in Gwangju City once a week to help children from low-income families by teaching them English, math, and science.
