2017 GIST Graduation Ceremony

□ The Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST, President Seung Hyeon Moon) held a graduation ceremony for the 2017 academic year at Oryong Hall on February 20, 2018, with about 400 people in attendance, including students and parents.

∘ A total of 310 students were granted degrees, including 41 Ph.D.'s, 174 master's degreets, and 95 bachelor's degree.

∘ To help celebrate the event, Director Dae-sik Lim of the Science and Technology Innovation Department at the Ministry of Science and Technology congratulated the graduates and gave words of encouragement, and he was present to award the Ministry of the Science and Technology Award.

□ On the other hand, the average number of papers published by the GIST's graduates in the SCI journals during their doctoral studies was 5.71 per person.

∘ Forty-one Ph.D. graduates published an average of 2.56 papers per person as the first-author and an average of 3.15 papers per person as a co-author, resulting in a total average of 5.71 papers per person.

□ Dr. Yang-Kyu Park (advisor Professor Jong Hyun Lee) of the School of Mechanical Engineering has published the most papers, including 12 major SCI papers and 30 other papers, including five as first-author and seven as a co-author, for a total of 42 papers.

∘ Dr. Yang-Kyu Park received the Ministry of the Science and Technology Award because he contributed a great deal to his lab's research direction with excellent academic achievements as well as creative ideas for fusion research. He also has three registered patents and five pending patents.

□ For the past several years, GIST has been ranked among the top three in the category of "research papers per professor," which shows the academic power of the institution's research capacity and research achievements. With this background, 100% of the graduate students have participated in research with all major courses being taught in English.

∘ This allows graduate students to write their papers in English for international journals during their degree program and also allows them to present their research projects and achievements at various international conferences.

□ Director Dae-sik Lim said in his congratulatory remarks, "GIST is an innovative model for Korea's science and engineering universities. It has grown into the best example of industry-academia cooperation as a science and technology hub. Graduation is the start of another new door to victory in the future of our graduates. I wish you all the best."

□ GIST President Seung Hyeon Moon said, "Graduates who have been awarded a degree today should be boldly challenged to solve problems faced by human society with the competence and confidence gained from GIST. I hope you will become a warm-hearted science and technology engineer who will not forget about your responsibilities to society."
