Graduate Time Limit

The institute offers programs leading to M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. Students are expected to maintain full-time student status and continuous registration until completion of all requirements. It normally takes two years to finish an M.S. program and four years for a Ph.D. program. For a Master's degree, students need to spend at least two semesters exclusively in full-time study at GIST, or to take a maximum of 3 years to complete their degree. Ph.D. students have a minimum of four semesters of full-time study or a maximum of 7 years to complete their degree.

Academic Year

The academic year consists of two semesters, each comprising 16 weeks of instruction. The first semester starts on the first day of March and ends 16 weeks later, and the second semester starts on the first day of September and ends 16 weeks later.

Course Registration

You need to register for courses using the ZEUS System after deciding which courses you would like to take. After registering for the classes, print out your course schedule and submit it to the department for approval by the instructors, the advisor and the department chair during the course registration period. ※ Students should register for a minimum of 9 credits and a maximum of 12 credits for each semester. Upon an Advisor's (Professor's) approval, students may register for up to 15 credits. If a student fails to complete 9 credits in one semester, his/her stipend will be suspended.

Course Add/Drop

To change courses, you also need to use the ZEUS System. After changing courses, print out the new schedule and submit it to the department for approval by the instructor, the advisor and the department chair within the first two weeks of the semester.

Course Withdrawal

To withdraw from courses, you need to fill out a Course Withdrawal Request form and submit it to your department with the approval of the instructor, the advisor and the department chair within the first nine weeks of the semester. The grade of the course will be marked as "W" on the transcript and does not affect your record. You must remain registered in at least 9 credits even after withdrawal.

Course work

In order to complete the course work, you would take courses to get minimum credit as follows. For MS programs, students should take at least 36 credits (including 12 credits of research course). For Ph.D programs, students should take at least 72 credits (including 30 credits of research course). Remind that the credit can be accumulated with your credit of MS course after official approval .

Korean class

To achieve a degree from GIST, all international students must take a Korean class offered by the Institute and must receive a grade of 'S(Satisfactory)'. The course will be offered every semester. You can take the course any time before graduation and choose any level, depending on your own Korean language proficiency.
