The Beginning


    In order to actively cope with changes in science technological environment of the future, foster human resources in science and technology field and increase R&D capabilities of the nation, a higher level research institute needed to be established. Based on the findings of two rounds of feasibility study in May of 1989 and February of 1991,

    an establishment committee was formed in December 1991 followed by formation of establishment group in March 1992. On 5th August 1993, the National Assembly passed the bill to establish Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology and an executive order have been enacted on 6th October of 1993. On 11th October, Dr. Ha Doo-hong was appointed as the first chairman of the institute and presided the historical ground breaking ceremony at the construction site withing in Gwangju Chumdan Science Industry Complex.


1990-2000s: Decade of Growth

Based on nurturing international scientists, development and transferring future source technologies and establishing optimized education and research environment, GIST has been making great steps of leaps. As a result of this, the QS Asia University Rankings 2010 ranked the institute at the Asian top with the number of papers per faculty.
(Data: QS Asia University Rankings 2010-papers per Faculty).Every student who graduated GIST with Ph.D.published an average of 8.8 papers to SCI-level international journals (the top in Korea) while they were studying in GIST and enrolled students acquired an average of 0.11 patents in 2009.

GIST, Leap in 2010



    GIST was ranked at 10th and 1st in global and Asia, respectively, with the number of quoted papers per faculty by the U.K. QS World University Rankings.
